Detailed Itinerary for 3 Days Cyinzobe Hiking Tour

Day 1: Transfer Kigali to Nyungwe- Hike from Uwinka Trail Head

Transfer from your hotel in Kigali early in the morning and embark on a 6-hour drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. En route, you will have a stopover at the former King’s palace in Nyanza for a tour of Rwanda’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Have your lunch and proceed driving to Nyungwe park. You will then drive to Uwinka Visitor Center which is the starting point for your 3 days hike on the Cyinzobe trail.

After your briefing, begin your 3-hour hike (depending on your level of fitness and hiking pace) to arrive at your first campsite. The first stretch of the Cyinzobe trail introduces you to Nyungwe Forest’s abundant biodiversity.

The hike takes you through deep tropical flora in the forest with huge ferns, orchids and bamboo trees. The hike rewards you with stunning views of well-terraced hills, sounds of primates, as well as rich birdlife in the area.

As you continue with your hike through the forest, the trail becomes steeper with relatively low slopes and descending hills. Later in the afternoon, you will arrive at your first campsite where you will be spending the night.

Have dinner at your campsite.

Day 2: Kamiranzovu Wetland

Start your day early with breakfast at your camping site. You will then hike along the edge of Kamiranzovu swamp which is home to a large number of bird species including Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, the Blue-headed Sunbird, Black-faced Apalis, Black-billed Turaco and the Pink-footed Puffback, among others.

The hike along the Kamiranzovu trail takes approximately 6 hours and can be considered a relatively moderate hike. The trail rewards you with breathtaking views of waterfalls stream down rocky cliffs, presenting you with stunning views of the forest scenery.

You will be camping near Kamiranzovu River and have dinner under a beautifully lit skyline.

Day 3: Kamiranzovu- Gisakura and Drive Back to Kigali

Today marks the last day of your hike. Start your morning with breakfast before commencing your final stretch leading to Gisakura Visitor Center where you will end your hike. This hike takes roughly 3-4 hours depending on your pace.

As you slowly descend through the forest, you will come across vast tea plantations that surround the park. You will arrive at Gisakura Visitor Center marking the end of your hike along the 23 kilometer Cyinzobe trail.

Have lunch and then embark on your return journey to Kigali where you will be dropped off at a hotel of your choice or airport.
