Detailed Itinerary of 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla And Wildlife Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your Rwanda safari starts in Kigali City with arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your guide and go for a city tour visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Site to understand Rwanda’s history, then explore local markets for crafts and fresh produce. Later, drive to Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas.

The journey takes about 2-3 hours, with views of rolling hills. When you arrive in Kinigi, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Twin Lakes Exploration

Wake up early, meet your guide and head to the park headquarters in Kinigi where you will join other trekkers for briefing about gorilla trekking and the right to behave while in the presence of the gorillas, together with rangers and guides, head to the starting point and enter into the forest looking for mountain gorillas.

The trek through the forests of takes approximately 2 to 5 hours or more depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night. On locating the gorillas, you will spend one hour in their presence taking pictures and observing their life in the forest.

Return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, head to the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo for a relaxing boat cruise and nature walk. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Hike Bisoke

Wake up for breakfast, return to the park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing about golden monkey trekking. Then head into the forest searching for these playful primates, golden monkeys are found in the bamboo section of Volcanoes National Park and you will watch them play, feed and groom.

Later, you will go on a Mount Bisoke Hike, a volcanoes with a beautiful Crater Lake at the top. The climb takes about 4-6 hours, with steep sections, but the view is worth it.

Day 4: Transfer to Akagera National Park with Evening Boat Cruise

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and embark on a journey to Akagera National Park, the only savannah park in Rwanda and a place where you will see the Big Five and other wildlife species Africa is famous for.

The drive takes about 4-5 hours, passing farms and small towns. Arrive in time for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, you will spot hippos, crocodiles and several water birds such as fish eagles. In the evening, the water is calm, making it a peaceful way to end the day. Head to your lodge for check in and dinner.

Day 5: Game Drive, Nature Walk

Wake up early for a game drive to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions from the comfort of your safari vehicle. Akagera National Park’s landscape is open, so animals are easier to find and see.

You will return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon go for a guided nature walk near the lake. You will get a close encounter with animals including giraffes, warthogs, antelopes among others. Later, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Departure
