Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Karibu Rwanda!

Arrive in Kigali today for your Rwanda Primates Safari. Depending on time of your flight, our Salt Holidays safari guide will be at the airport to pick you. Meet and greet with your tour guide and you will get to experience this fast-growing city on a Kigali city tour, a drive through it provides you an opportunity to view one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park & Ethnographic Museum

Embark on a long drive to Nyungwe forest which takes approximately 6 hours.  Enroute you will pay a visit the ethnographic Butare Museum of Rwanda and the Nyanza kings Palace to discover an exhibition of traditional artifacts and objects, black and white photographs, tools, and other items.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the cultures and traditions of the Rwandan people

After this experience, proceed to your lodge for check in and overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy walk

Continue on the Rwanda primate’s safari after an early breakfast. Transfer to Nyungwe forest for Chimpanzee trekking after briefing from the guide. Nyungwe forest is rich in botanical diversity. Some of the primates in Nyungwe are; Chimpanzees, L’Hoest monkeys, Columbus monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys etc. The park is also home to about 300 bird species and several butterflies.

Your community guide will lead you into the forest for chimp trekking after a short briefing. The time you spend in the forest depends on the location of the chimpanzees.

Later in the afternoon take on the 100-meter canopy walk tester, which will you an opportunity to experience the tropical rainforest wildlife from the sky. It lasts approximately 2 hours after which you return to your hotel.

Day 4: Colobus Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Volcanoes National park

This morning again we leave for the briefing point at Nyungwe forest. After briefing, the ranger guide will lead you into the forest for the Colobus monkey trekking. Look forward to watching the monkeys groom, feed and play with one another. You are allowed 1 hour in their presence before you start the trek back.

Start the scenic drive to Volcanoes national park. Have a stopover visit at the former Imbabazi orphanage and learn about the transformation work.

Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Guardians Village  

Start the gorilla trek with a briefing from the ranger guide at the park headquarters. After the brief, join a gorilla group with guidance from your safari guide.

Drive to the trail head after briefing to start your trek into the forest. After one hour with the gorillas, you start your hike out of the park. Your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the lodge for down time.

In the afternoon, visit the Gorilla Guardians village. Learn about the culture and history of Rwanda. Try out your bow and arrow shooting skills or basketry etc.

Day 6: Golden Monkey trekking and Airport drop-off

After breakfast, return to Volcanoes National Park for a golden monkey trek. Explore the monkeys’ bamboo habitat with a guide, who will lead you to groups of habituated golden monkeys. You will spend up to an hour with these monkeys. After lunch, check out and drive back to Kigali, stopping for last minute shopping in the Kigali Art markets.

Afterwards, you will proceed to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. Your arrival at the airport will be timed for your departure flight.
